Summary:
ReplyDelete• Well, luckily, Martha and Hitler met and they did not work out. However, on the other side Dodd is starting to realize that he cannot really stop what is going on with Hitler in Germany. German voters voted in favor of leaving the League of Nations at 95.1% support, who figures. Martha falls in love with someone named Brois. They are both married. Dodd schemed with a reporter to avoid a murder attempt, it was successful and the assignation was avoided. Dodd thinks that Diels was the reason this information was released. Even though he has a high position with the Nazis, Dodd thinks very highly of Diels.
Paraphrase:
• Towards the end of part four, Dodd and a reporter made a plan to plant a story of a future murder before it happens in hopes that it will avoid it. This plan was successful and the killing was avoided. Dodd thinks very highly of Diels and even thinks that the reason this assignation attempt made it out to him was because of Diels. The irony in this is that Martha sees Dodd, but has fallen in love with Boris when her dad has grown towards Diels.
Quote:
• “He remained convinced that Diels had played a key role in revealing the plot. Dodd continued to be impressed by Dodd” (204).
o This quote is important because it shows how Dodd assumes that Diels gave the info. It also shows the appreciation that Dodd has been expressing towards Diels for some reason.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteMartha is set up to meet Hitler because Putzi thought that they would be good together. Fortunately, it didn't work out. Martha's relationship with Boris has ignited because of the failed arrangement. Every November a group throws a huge dinner and ball for people in authority in Berlin. The people who organize the event have to think very carefully about where everyone is going to sit, otherwise there will be arguments. It is close to Christmas at this point in the book and the Dodds are amazed and caught off guard at all the decorations that line the street in Berlin.
Paraphrase:
One lady at the ball, Bella Fromm, was worried about her friend, Poulette, because Poulette found out that her grandmother was Jewish. This would mean that she would most likely lose her job as a columnist. Bella was worried because "Poulettte wouldn't be the first Jew or newly classified non-Aryan to try suicide in the wake of Hitler's rise" (191). Bella drove to Poulette's house to make sure she was okay. the servant told Bella that she was sleeping. Bella didn't listen and went straight for her room. Her nightmare became a reality. Poulette had overdosed on Veronal. The doctors tried to save her, but Poulette ended up dying of pneumonia.
Quote:
Boris was helping the Dodd family decorate their Christmas tree. Martha wanted white decorations to go on the tree. Boris protested and said, "But red is a more beautiful color that white, darling" (197). Red is the color for communism. White represents holiness or purity which describes the Dodd family. The communists in Germany are cruel individuals, but the Dodds don't act the same way. They are more loving and plain in the way they live their lives.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteIn Part IV of “The Garden of Beasts”, Dodd is realizing he cannot stop Hitler and all the bad things he is doing. We figure out that 95.1% of Germans had voted to leave the League of Nations which meant that a lot of Germany was on Hitler’s side. Martha and Hitler finally meet and realize they would not work out. Since Hitler and Martha do not work out she falls in love with a guy named Brois. The two get married shortly after. Towards the end the Dodd’s attend a ball for the authoritative figures in Berlin. They are amazed with all of the lavish Christmas decorations and how much work was put into that one night.
Paraphrase:
The Germans are siding with Hitler which is concerning because he is not a good person. 95.1% of Germans voted on Germany leaving the League of Nations and that caused America to get scared. Dodd knows he cannot do anything to stop Hitler and just has to sit back and watch everything happen.
Quote:
• “Martha and Hitler never repeated their encounter, nor had she seriously expected they would…” (162)
• Martha and Hitler only met up once and realized they would not work out. This is significance of this is that it is good for Dodd not to have Martha so close to Hitler because that could’ve put Martha’s life in danger.
Summary
ReplyDeleteIn Part IV, Dodd is facing some difficult situations. Martha is arranged to meet Hitler, but they did not end up working out. Instead, Martha's love for Boris intensified as things are getting serious between the two. Even though they are married, they continue to see each other. Germany has voted in favor of leaving the League of Nations, which is a bad sign for Dodd. Dodd receives news of an attempting murder, but he stops it with the help of a news reporter.
Paraphrase
Germany is starting to give in to Hitler's ideas, which caused them to leave the League of Nations. Dodd is unable to act on this situation, which frustrates him because he knows the future is looking grim.
Quote
"Now Martha and Boris felt freer about revealing their relationship to the world"(179).
The relationship between the two intensifies as they became more fond of each other. This is significant because if Hitler and Martha formed a relationship, Hitler would have leverage over Dodd.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteMartha was supposed to be set up with Hitler, but it didn’t work out. Since that didn’t go as planned Martha and Boris fall for each other and they end up getting married. During the fall and winter months there are many parties. People who plan these parties are very particular where they sit everyone because they do not want arguments to arise. The Dodd’s seem amazed at all the decorations in the streets of Berlin during the Christmas time.
Paraphrase:
Americans are in fear of Germany and Hitler. He has got 95.1% of Germany to side with him in leaving the League of Nations. Americans know he is not a good person but William Dodd knows he cannot do anything about it at this point.
Quote:
“Poulette wouldn’t be the first Jew or newly classifies non-Aryan to try suicide in the wake of Hitler’s rise.” (191)
This quote shows how evil Hitler is and how the Jews were terrified of him. Most of them tried to commit suicide which is absolutely awful.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteIn part IV of “In the Garden of Beasts”, Martha meets with Hitler, but luckily they did not work out. Martha falls for Boris who is married, but that is nothing new from Martha. There is a big dinner and ball for the higher-class people in Germany. It is Christmas time and Boris and Martha are decorating and Boris mentions how he likes red more than white. Red is the color of communism. The Dodd’s are amazed of Christmas time in Berlin. Dodd also realizes how strong Hitler is and how there is not much else he can do. The Germans vote in favor is leaving the League of Nations.
Paraphrase:
As Martha and Boris are driving through the countryside around Berlin, Martha spots something of the old Germany. It is Jesus on the cross. Martha is described as not very religious, but was shocked at the sight of this. Boris extends his arms out and crosses his legs to mock Jesus and tells Martha that he is dying for her. This does not amuse Martha. She is starting to become a little bit more serious.
Quote:
“Do you want me to put my white orchids on top? Or would you prefer a handsome red star?" “She insisted on white.” “He protested.” “But red is a more beautiful color that white, darling" (197). This is a conversation between Boris and Martha as they are decorating for Christmas at her house. He likes the red more because red was the color of communism.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteIn Part IV of “In the Garden of Beasts” William Dodd realizes that with the support that the Nazi Germany is providing to Hitler; He will be impossible to control. Sure enough, with majority of German population on his side, Hitler decides to leave the League of Nations. Martha had finally been set up to meet with Hitler. However, it is not too long before they figure out that it will not work out. So, Martha steps out and begins dating a guy named Boris. At this time in the book, Christmas is right around the corner and the Germans have begun their preparations for the festive season. The Dodds are astonished by the Christmas decorations and work that was put in as they step into the ball for the important figures.
Paraphrase:
Hitler was certainly unhappy with the concerns raised by Dodd. After a brief pause the men began engaging into a detailed conversation of the things that concerned William Dodd. William Dodd then takes a step further and asks Hitler if a small dispute at the borders of the German Empire be enough to declare war on the nations of the world. (158)
Quote:
In the meeting with Hitler, William Dodd tries very hard to make Hitler say that he wants another World War. But, Hitler dodges every event of clear statement by bringing the general public of Germany into the matter. Hitler says that he might agree to a peaceful negotiation, “but we might not be able to restrain the German people” (159). This conversation is worth noting that though Hitler and the Third Reich are preparing for a war, there is no fear or denial of the war from amongst the Country.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteDuring this section of the book Mr. Dodd begins to realize that it is too late to stop or even try to change what has happened in Germany. It is shown that over 90% of Germans are in favor of leaving the league of nations. Martha and Hitler end up not working out however she later becomes interested in a new man who is also married named Brois. Dodd slightly avoided a murder attempt and believes that the reason he is alive is thanks to Diels.
Paraphrase:
The Germanys recent love for Hitler concerned many outside Germany and many begin to fear the worst. 95.1% of Germans agreed with Germany’s decision to leave the league of nations further frightening neighboring countries. Dodd now knows that it is too late to stop Hitler and that he now must watch out for his own life.
Quote
"Now Martha and Boris felt freer about revealing their relationship to the world"(179).
Martha and Boris’ relationship moves to even further Heights. This is good for Dodd because now Marthas relationship with Hitler is completely over and Dodd doesn’t have to focus on trying to impress him.
Summary:
ReplyDeleteIn Part IV of “In the Garden of Beasts”, Dodd is beginning to realize the amount of power Hitler really has. His abusive authority has spiraled out of control and it is far too late to even think about doing anything about it from the inside. Martha attempted to establish a relationship with Hitler, but it ended up not working out. Because of this failed attempt at a relationship, Boris and Martha’s relationship began to ignite deeper feelings. It is holiday season in Germany and the city of Berlin is beginning to prepare for the annual feast and dance for the more authoritative people of society. The entire city gets decorated and made to look very festive. The Dodd’s are amazed at how beautiful the city looks in a time like this.
Paraphrase: pg 160
Before meeting Hitler, Martha spent much time sorting through outfits trying to find the best one to wear. She knew that Germans liked their woman with very little makeup and clothes not too revealing. Martha found it ironic that she was now presenting herself to a man that she once believed to be a clown, but now determined to believe him a more dignified soul.
Quote:
“Nonetheless the man had a remarkable ability to transform himself into something far more compelling, especially when speaking in public or during private meetings when some topic enraged him.”
This quote is very significant to the entirety of the story because it represents how the outside appearance of a person isn’t always who they are. Hitler has qualities of a true politician and these qualities would play out perfectly in his favor when it came to brainwashing the entire nation into really believing him and putting trust in the swastika. In hard times people look for something to cling to, something to put faith in. Hitler was that for the people of Germany Post World War I.

ReplyDeleteQUOTE:
"Dodd nonetheless left the chancellery feeling convinced that Hitler was sincere about wanting peace" (159)
This quote is significant because it shows how manipulative Hitler was. He could convince anyone that he was being sincere, all while hiding his dark plans and secrets. Even Dodd, an outsider who has witnessed growing oppression and brutality caused by the Nazis, was victim to the spell Hitler put everyone under.
SUMMARY:
In Part IV, Dodd meets with Hitler for the first time. Dodd notes that Hitler is exceedingly plain, however he can really make one believe that he is being sincere. Dodd and Hitler talk about Hitler's hopes and plans for Germany, and he manages to convince Dodd that "Hitler was sincere about wanting peace" (159). Hanfstaengl arranges for Martha and Hitler to have lunch. Martha also notices that Hitler is not what she expected. He is very gentle and unobtrusive. She admits that "It was hard to believe that this man was one of the most powerful men in Europe" (161). However, they never met up again. While Dodd really wants to "awaken Germany to the dangers of its current path and to nudge Hitler's government on to a more humane and rational course" (163), however he realizes that he can't really do as much as he thought. Contrary to what he previously believed, the majority of Germany is pro-Hitler, creating something almost impossible to change. Dodd also starts to realize that other officials back home are becoming less and less pleased with his work in Germany. Messersmith invites Dodd to a party with many "especially rabid nazis" (166) in hopes of showing Dodd their true colors. Dodd learns that they all believe that America is run and dictated by Jews, which isn't true. Martha attends a court trial (she was invited by Diels) pertaining to the Reichstag arson trial. Herman Göring was the main witness. He believed that the arson was committed by a group of communists, even though Marinus Van der Lubbe confessed and claimed that he alone did it. Göring was up against Georgi Dimitrov, a Bulgarian communist. The two argue for a while, even though everyone knows the judge is going to rule in favor of Göring. Martha notes that Dimitrov was "a brilliant, attractive, dark man emanating the most amazing vitality and courage..." (173), while Göring was arrogant and hot tempered. A Swiss reporter made note of the ruling that "the world had been told that, no matter whether the accused was sentenced or acquitted by the court, his fate had already been sealed" (173). This shows the corruption in the Nazi regime, nobody could stop them.
PARAPHRASE:
From page 174
In the winter, Martha focused romantically on Boris. They often went on long drives together in the countryside of Berlin. One day she notices a shrine to Jesus on the side of the road. She finds it startling how graphic and gory it is, it's a representation of the crucifixion. Boris is joking around and stands as if he's being crucified, saying he would die for Martha, but she doesn't find it amusing at all. Boris expressed his confusion of why Christians like to see a tortured man, but Martha argues that what they adore is his sacrifice for his beliefs. Boris sarcastically says that so many people are like that, but Martha claims that Dimitrov was like that when he stood up to Göring in trial. Boris then states that he was a communist, and that being the reason that he was so brave.
In this section of Larson “In the Garden of Beasts Dodd realizes that the changes in Germany are to progressed to fix and establish a well grounded society in the Nazi regime. In this section Martha Dodd and Hitler are suppose to be in a relationship but it does not work out for various circumstances. Dodd believes that his family’s security lies with Diels and the protections he provides with his clos relationship with Hitler.
ReplyDeleteParaphrase:
The Germans as a nation agree with the decision to leave the league of nations as they know it will hold there country back from forward progression in the worlds modern time in that period of time leading up to WW2. More then 90% of Germans actually agree with this. Dodd comes to a realization that Germany is becoming very volatile and the safety of his family may not be secure.
Quote:
“I need hardly say that I hope all this will be kept entirely confidential” (168)
This quote is very important as to how Dodd is handling the situation and seriousness of the Nazi party and their distinct rules. Dodd know he need to be secretive and discrete about what he does other wise he may be risking his life and jeopardizing his loved ones.
Summary: In part five of “In the Garden of Beasts” Dodd has his meeting with Hitler. He is surprised at Hilter’s personality and he “left the chancellery feeling convinced that Hitler was sincere about wanting peace” (159). The German government is holding an election and voting if Germany should leave the League of Nations. Martha and Hitler have their date, and they do not work out, so Martha continues her relationships with Borris. There is a press ball that all high officials are invited to and the seating is important.
ReplyDeleteParaphrase: Martha is trying to decide what kind of relationships she wants in her life. She and Borris seem to be getting more serious, but they have some issues. Borris becomes extremely jealous because Martha still interacts with other men. Borris eventually admits that he loves Martha, but then Martha confesses she knows he is married. Borris is embarrassed and admits he also has a daughter. Since they are confessing things Martha admits she is married to a man from New York, but they are separated.
Quote: “He has a knack as well for projecting an aura of sincerity that blinded onlookers to his true motives and beliefs, though Dodd had not yet come to a full appreciation of this aspect of his character” (158).
This quote is significant to the text as a whole because it explains Hitler’s personality. Dodd is even blinded by this character trait. This is how Hitler got the German people and the German officials to follow his commands.
